Looking for native plants that grow in Northeastern Ohio?

Not every plant will grow well in every area. If you live in Northeastern Ohio and are looking to get planting before the first frost but are not sure what to plant, you have come to the right place! There are many beautiful plants that are native to our area!

First, you want to make sure you have your area ready for these plants to thrive. Get your flower beds tilled down and ready! You will want to make sure you have a good layer of bedding/gardening soil on the ground so that your new native plants will have all the nutrients they need to survive.

Are you looking for a flowering plant? Here are some flowering perennials to choose from.Native Plants New England Aster

If it is a flowering perennial you want, you might want to try a New England Aster. New England Aster’s are pink, purple or blue in color and grow between 3 and 6 feet. They bloom in the fall around August, September, and October. These plants like the sun

Black-eyed Susan’s are another good choice. They are in the sunflower family, yellow to orange petals and a dark center and grow typically 24 inches tall.  These plants like the sun.

Cardinal Flower could be a beautiful addition to your garden. They have tall spikes of red, trumpet-shaped flowers that rise above dark green foliage. Growing 3 to 6 feet tall and bloom from mid-summer to fall and love the sun.

Looking for ground cover plants? Here are some beautiful choices.

Try a Christmas Fern in your landscape design. These beauties are resistant from deer and will expand to form a large group. They will grow to about 1 or 2 feet wide, however, they do not creep so you will have to divide them up and replant if you would like it to cover more area.

How about a Foamflower? This is a wildflower that grows 6 to 12 inches tall. The blooms are white and pink in color. There are two types; one that will creep and one that stays in a clump. These plants like the shade.

Grasses are a nice addition to plant in your garden; they will give it height.

Big Bluestem is a warm-season perennial bunchgrass. It has blue-green stems that grow 4 to 8 feet in height. Bluestem’s like moist soil but are drought tolerant and can live in sun or part shade.

Another great choice would be Plantain Leaf Sedge. Having wrinkled, wide leaves and basal sheaths that are deep wine red in color. This is a wonderful choice for gardens because it will bloom early, and it can tolerate a wide variety of soil types.

Native Plants American BittersweetAre you looking for a native vine?

American Bittersweet is a good choice for vine growers. This is a vine that grows 15 to 20 feet tall, produces a yellowish-green flower that will bloom in the spring. Once the flowers bloom you will then see berries grow on the vines.
